Romans 3:21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,
3:22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;
3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; NAS
As we read the Word, we understand that we have no righteousness in ourselves. Our ONLY righteousness comes from the Lord Jesus Christ. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. That means you. And me!.And everyone.
However, the Lord, in His mercy, sent His Son to die for us. Now we have righteousness. Not from ourselves, because the Lord does not want us to be able to boast.
This is why I said in the previous chapter that if you were angry at my words, then you need these words. I know that whenever I get angry when someone mentions a failing of mine (even if I do not want to recognize it) then that means that it almost certainly IS a failing of mine. I do not get angry if someone accuses me of, say, not loving my cat, because I have no doubts that I do. I might get puzzled or exasperated that they are so obviously misguided and are not listening, but I do not get the least bit angry.
No, anger is what happens when, deep down, you know that something has at least a nugget of truth. If someone told me that I was proud or haughty, that might make me angry. I actually know that pride is something I struggle with, so to be accused of it might make me defensive because deep down I know that I have been caught.
The Lord does not want us to boast in ourselves, He wants us to boast in Him. There are many reasons. First of all, He deserves it; we don’t. If we have good then we can boast and He does not get that praise, we do. We “outdid” God then, which is, of course, ridiculous to even consider.
Also, He is the only One who can save people. So if we allow people to think WE are good, then they might not look any farther than us for their comfort. However, if we are honest with them and say “It’s not me, it is the Lord. I have nothing good in me. Anything you see is all Him.”, then they will turn to Him. He can provide people peace, love, joy, forgiveness, righteousness, we can’t.
If you ever feel yourself falling into pride, remember that you will be leading others away from Him if you allow your pride any foothold.
