We cannot earn His love because…wait for it…you can’t earn something you already have.  Period.

You may keep going back to the thought that “God can’t possibly know me, love me, forgive me”.  But He knew you before you knew you. He already knows everything you will ever do and He still loves you. He made you, personally, as His creation and then He called YOU as His child.  You love Him because He loved you first (No, really.  No one loves Him first.  He loves first, then we love Him.  It always, always happens that way).

You follow Him because He called you to His side.  Your heart is open to Him because He wanted you first.  And He wants you still.  He is not going to change His mind with this sin or that, with this good deed or that bad deed–remember He knew them all before you were even born.

He knows you—more than you know you.  He created all people, and He desires all to come to Him, but not everyone becomes His child.  He knew you would be open to Him and He called you to Him to be a sibling to Jesus.

Romans 8:29 For whom he foreknew, he also foreordained [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren: 30 and whom he foreordained, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. ASV

Jesus was the first child and we are His brothers and sisters because God loved us first.

1 John 4:4:19  We love, because he first loved us. ASV

And again:  He loved us when we were still sinners, when we did not have the blood of Jesus covering us.

Romans 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. 12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned– 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  ASV

That is amazing if you think about it.  We were His enemies, and He gave us His only Son, His Child with Whom He was well pleased.  Now, if He allowed His Child to be tortured and killed for us when we were His enemy,  what on earth will He withhold from us now that we are His children?  He gave His Son!  Giving us peace when we trust Him is small potatoes compared to what He already did for us.

Romans 8:31 What then shall we say to these things? If God [is] for us, who [is] against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?  ASV
