You have to keep pushing yourself. You have to make it farther. Every time you try, even if you don’t do as well as you would like, you are making progress to the day that you will be free.
It will seem very slow at first—two steps forward, one step back. It will seem like your goal is so far away that you will never get there, but God is faithful and He will credit your attempts and continually strengthen you until one day you look around and realize that you are so much better than you were before. All that that had come before, the fear, the restrictions, will all seem like a dream that never really happened. God will have lead you farther than you had ever realized you could go.
You will be brave.
Psalms 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. NIV
Remember, you are not doing this alone. This battle is not just yours. Jesus will fight for you and the Holy Spirit will lead you, and God will bless your efforts, even small ones. They are waiting to carry you to a blessed place—peace in your mind. But you have to be willing to go there. You have to tell yourself “I will leave this place of fear that I am used to and comfortable with, and I will venture. I will walk to peace and hope and faith. I am not going alone, the whole of heaven is waiting eagerly for me to succeed. All of heaven is urging me, coaching me, supporting me and cheering me on. This is not my fight, this is God’s fight for me. This is Jesus redeeming me. This is Him spilling His blood. God wants me with Him but I have to go there. I cannot dwell in fear, I must follow in faith to be free. I will be free because God wants me free. He will lead me to Him, but I have to get up and walk. He will support me, sometimes He will carry me, but always He will be with me.”.
2 Cor 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. 9 Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. NKJV
Close your eyes, don’t walk by sight. Don’t rely on your inner sight of fear that tells you what dangers are around every corner. Close that false eye of yours completely. Trust in God. God is there for you and will lead you if you trust in Him.
Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” NIV
Those are not just pretty words, they are the truth—the absolute truth.
I am going to ask you if you trust in God, but I am going to tell you now that the answer is no if you are having trouble with OCD, panic attacks, etc. That might make you angry, it might make you sad.
What it SHOULD make you is aware, and once you are aware, then the real healing can begin. You cannot heal until you are willing to trust God with what frightens you the most. When you go to Him and say “Father, if it is Your will for these things to happen to me, then so be it. I trust You.”. I did that with my fear of being sick. I was so tired of this fear that I truly said with my mouth and heart “God, I am tired of this fear. If I have to be sick all night long to get over it then so be it. If I have to be sick for a month to get over it then fine. I trust You to do what needs to be done to rid me of this fear.”. You know what? He did not make me sick. All I needed to do was to truly surrender to Him and He could fix me.
Do that today. Surrender your fears to God so completely that you will trust Him even if you have to face your fear. Then you will have surrendered to Him what you could not save yourself. You will be free. Only Jesus can make you free, and you will be free indeed.
God wants to have power over your life. When you are afraid of something, it has power over you. It has control of you. Understand that. And if you give fear power over you, then you take the power over your life that should be God’s away from Him.
You are worshiping two masters, you are robbing from God and giving to fear. You are trying to save your life but you will lose it. You will lose it by losing all the joy that is there for you. You will lose all the blessings that God has for you—they will be there but you won’t see them, they will basically be wasted on you because you won’t enjoy them or partake of them because of fear. You are losing your life this very minute if you are letting fear and depression and anxiety be your master, and they are your master if they change your life in any little way. If you are accommodating your fear or your despair then you are a servant to them and not to God. You cannot adequately accommodate both God and fear because they are opposites. Light and darkness cannot dwell in the same place. Salt and fresh water cannot flow from the same spring. You cannot have both fear and faith.
Luke 9 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. NIV
This verse is vital for you. You are trying to save your life. You are trying to protect your life.
You will lose.
However, if you “lose” your life (meaning GIVE UP your attempts to protect yourself…surrendering your life to the Lord), you will save your life. Not only will you save your life eternally, but you will save your life from the misery that it is now. You will finally get to have a life! You will have a real life, not a mere existence of fear.
You do not have life right now, you just have existence. Life is not just “not dying”, but also living. Surrender your “mere existence” to the Lord, giving up your self-protecting behavior, and He will give you REAL life, both on earth and in heaven.
You can step out in faith, do it right now. Believe God, trust Him, because He loves you more than anyone ever could. He loves you even more than you do. As much as you want to succeed, He wants it ten times more—a THOUSAND times more. You have to trust Him and you will be free. You will be free. I guarantee it. Even more than that, God has guaranteed it many times over in His word.
