2)  The more you recognize His glory, His sacrifice, not your own, you begin to understand.  You begin to put yourself in your proper place in the universe—not as the sole focus of your existence, but as a child of the Lord.  You begin to understand “Hey, I am the child of the King.  All good in me is only because of the Lord, and my existence is only to glorify Him and to bring others to the wonder and salvation of the Lord.  And not only that, but I am His child!  He loves me!”.

Right now you put your main focus on yourself, on your fear.  When you put your focus on the Lord, you can really understand the verses:

Romans 8:31-39  31 What then shall we say to these things? If God [is] for us, who [is] against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things? 33 Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth; 34 who is he that condemneth? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ASV

And:

Hebrews 13: 6 So that with good courage we say, The Lord is my helper; I will not fear: What shall man do unto me? ASV

 And:

Matthew 6:25 25 Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? 26 Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye of much more value then they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit unto the measure of his life? 28 And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: 29 yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, [shall he] not much more [clothe] you, O ye of little faith? 31 Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.  ASV

You will no longer be first in your life…and that’s a good thing!  By putting yourself first, even if you didn’t mean to, you created this problem in your mind.  You know that you have no power–that only the Lord does.  Your spirit isn’t stupid—it knows that power, grace, protection, freedom, salvation, hope, joy, blessing, health come from the Lord.  Your spirit knows, but your mind had not accepted that truth.  So you feel the battle as your mind tries to control the universe to protect you, but your spirit knows that that is false.  That is why we know what we do is wrong.  That is why we call out to the Lord:  We are ashamed of our actions.  If we actually thought these things were the right things to do, that our protection actually came from our washing our hands, or avoiding a mall, or collecting old magazines or fretting every moment of the day, then we would find peace in it.  We would not hide it, we would be proud of it!

We do not do these things because we are proud of them, but because we are afraid of what will happen when we stop.  We enter a spiral of shame, resolve that is quickly broken, and continued useless thoughts and actions.
